LAWYER SKILLS TRAINING THROUGH ROLE PLAYING

THEY improv provides a variety of lawyer skills programs including witness prep training utilizing role playing with professional actors assisting attorneys and others in the law firm to understanding how to interact with someone who is preparing to take the stand. Beyond just the attorneys, often paralegals or others may be asked to help work with witnesses prior to testimony and we work with them to help teach techniques to put them at ease and help make testimony more effective.

Actors from THEY improv can act as potential witnesses to help attorneys and others in the firm to hone their skills at preparing witnesses for testimony. This isn't necessarily about coaching them through the details of the case, but is about helping them to relax on the stand and come across to the jury more naturally.

As an attorney presents a case, the veracity of the case is often measured by the ability of witnesses to come across as someone to be trusted and is in control of the knowledge that they are trying to relate. It's a simple fact that most people are unaccustomed to public speaking and can be nervous about the whole situation.

This is heightened even more when considering the consequences of the testimony to be given. Witnesses often worry that they might be condemning someone to jail, or taking their money, or even worse, feel that they may be putting themselves in danger. Walking the person through a quality witness prep program can better prepare them for their testimony and help them work out these concerns prior to taking the stand.

MASK WORK
We utilize a concept in acting called Mask Work. The idea is that when you are playing a character, you can feel free to not be self conscious because the person behind the mask of the character isn't being judged. We can still play the guilt, remorse, deception, anger, or other qualities that the character would have, just without the person playing the character pre-judging their actions. This allows for a more accurate portrayal of role-playing. Non-actors don't understand that concept and can give their performance more of a flat feel.
